WLF Energy brings battery intelligence in-house

Two European acquisitions give WLF Energy its own battery-management software and battery-cell development capability: the intelligence layer of a platform built in Europe, for Europe.

WLF Energy used its first day in public at The Battery Show Europe to announce two more pieces of its platform: PEM Motion's battery-management business unit and Cellovate, the company behind the Cellovate Battery Production Lab. Together they fill two of the largest gaps in Europe's energy-storage value chain.

The brain of every battery

Battery-management and energy-management systems decide how safely, how long and how profitably a battery works. This intelligence has mostly been sourced from outside Europe. PEM Motion's BMS unit comes from the battery-engineering community around PEM at RWTH Aachen University, from which PEM Motion was spun out. It brings years of experience in developing, integrating and validating advanced battery-management systems for automotive, industrial, off-highway and energy-storage applications.

Inside WLF Energy, that capability now runs the company's own battery systems: a proprietary European BMS rather than a bought-in component.

The energy transition will be won by the companies that own the full value chain, from cell to grid. Battery and energy-management systems are the intelligence of every clean-energy asset, and Europe cannot afford to depend on others for them. By integrating PEM Motion's BMS business unit and the Cellovate Battery Production Lab, we are building that intelligence in Europe, for Europe, and strengthening the foundation of our vertically integrated platform.

From cell research to industrial scale

The Cellovate Battery Production Lab adds depth in battery-cell technology, production processes and industrial scaling. Its purpose is to take new cell technologies out of the laboratory and into production. For WLF Energy, that means a shorter road from a new cell to a storage product customers can buy.

Battery and energy-management systems are the brains of every clean-energy asset. By acquiring and localising world-class BMS capability, WLF Energy is securing a sovereign, European foundation for the next generation of energy-storage systems.

Every layer in one company

With these steps, WLF Energy now holds each layer of its platform in-house, from generation and battery storage to battery- and energy-management software and AI-driven grid trading. That is how the company wants to remove the integration risk, margins and supply-chain dependencies that keep clean energy expensive in Europe, on the way to clean power below €0.10 per kilowatt-hour.

PEM Motion itself remains independent and works with WLF Energy as a technology partner, concentrating on battery testing, compliance, analysis, engineering services and training. Both companies share a commitment to high-performance, sustainable battery systems made in Europe.
